Generative search and answer systems increasingly also organize how what those documents are meant to mean is presented. They retrieve sources, select information, weight it, and synthesize an answer from it. Ranking has therefore not disappeared. In an analysis by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2025\/07\/22\/google-users-are-less-likely-to-click-on-links-when-an-ai-summary-appears-in-the-results\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pew Research Center<\/a>, users in the examined US sample clicked a traditional search result in 8% of visits when a Google AI Summary was shown; without an AI Summary, it was 15%. They opened a source link within the summary in only 1% of visits. The click has not disappeared. But an additional decision layer has inserted itself between source and perception.    <\/p>\n<p>This changes the task for organizations. It is no longer sufficient for a document to exist or for a URL to be discoverable. An organization must remain reconstructable as the same entity across distributed websites, languages, documents, and versions over time. Its statements must make it clear for whom they apply, what they apply to, when they apply, and within what scope. Relationships must not emerge only from layout. The machine-readable state must not contradict the visible content.
